Tanja Grunert Gallery is pleased to present Airport BZ, new works by Klemens Gasser. This will be Gasser’s sixth show with the gallery.
Gasser’s work often relates to nature, and this is his second artistic series depicting birds. Formerly based in Brooklyn, Gasser’s work evokes distance and longing. This is in evidence in this new series, Airport BZ, created in his hometown of Bolzano, Italy, after the artist relocated to Europe. The slideshow presentation intentionally invokes both sentimentality and artificiality, commenting on the way we are living and remembering now.
An artist and naturalist, Gasser interacts with the elements that his environment provides. From Coney Island to Northern Italy, he allows the landscape to dictate his parameters and inspire his subject matter. In this case, he is recording a very different environment than his previous Brooklyn based series. Landlocked and mountainous, Bolzano is emotionally and physically a world away from his Brooklyn home. The impressionistic feel of the work reflects the spirit of the artists’ photographic and painted seascapes, which are a meditation on distance, longing, and wanderlust. Perpetually in dialog with his environment, Gasser created these portraits of birds, in flight and resting, kinetic and meditative, during the pandemic lockdown. The dream-like textures and feral freedom of his subjects contrast with the larger worlds’ experience of geographic restriction and human routine.
Moving away from his former method of strictly preserving the original framing of each shot, Gasser uses cropping and zooming as a painterly technique, not only framing the work but creating textures and noise to manipulate atmosphere.
