Press Release

Monster of Evol

Tanja Grunert is proud to present Monster of Evol, an online exhibition by Laur Elias Traynor. For this exhibition, Traynor, a transgender artist, uses his body to make a monster in 24 phases.

The drawings of Monster of Evol were made and then photographed in the woods of Upstate New York between 2020 and 2021. The drawings consider the body and its ability to transform. In Monster of Evol, nature, animals and the Monster are intertwined in a fantasy. Mud, dirt, clay , rocks, horns, antlers, gowns, hooves, fists, fingers, toes, tongues, lace, wings, spikes, tentacles and feelers become the Monster of Evol, whose body is transforming. At their core, Monsters allow us to face our fears.

Monster of Evol is viewable online till 12 AM on January 21, 2022.

Artist Statement for Monster of Evol

So you want to vanquish the monster huh?
You want to vanquish the monster
Are they within or without?
Do they love? Can they be loved?
Can you love what you don't know? Is it impossible?
They expanded and Contracted with each breath
Everything changing and transforming
“It doesn't float to the surface until after its happened”

You don't get a full look at them.
Maybe a peek from under their wing.
Monsters transform and they shapeshift over time.
It takes time.
The dead branches of winter,
“aren't dead they are waiting for the opportunity to thrive”

The ice thawed
Purple flowers bloomed
and fell from the trees after two weeks
Birds built nests with twigs and mud from the lake
Skulls rolled down dandelion covered hills

The sunset made a mirror out of the water
Venom poured from the monsters neck
Bees flew out from every orifice
A wild horse has been said to signify both death and freedom.
So what does it mean when one comes to graze at our feet?

I started drawing Monster of EVOL in August 2020 before my 28th Birthday. Unmasked to the perverted, vile, traumatic it washed over my reptile skin and it melted away. It was rotten lace. Hoofs over fists, my face was made and unmade from clay until it was swallowed by my heart… At its core Monster of EVOL is about the desire to transform. The terrifying Monster begins and ends as a gentle horse.
