Galerie Tanja Grunert is pleased to present Nine Lives, Michael Alan's fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition runs from 31 March - 30 April, 2016 and spotlights a selection of the New York based artist's latest meanderings on paper. The drawings exhibitied in Nine Lives are both a continuation and departure from the artist's earlier work.
The prolific artist and performer will be exhibiting all new mixed media works that build on his dysmorphic, yet painfully exact forms. Uitilizing a unique mark making language Alan shares with us a glimpse into his present as he experiences it. The compulsive need to make marks and capture the happenings of the intangible now. The artist acts as a report, his work as controted, technicolor filter through which the viewer is invited to decipher their own measure of reality.
For Michael Alan, art is a combination of harmonious opposites, close observation, catharsis, a means of communication and a radical juxtaposition of dimensional elements. He challenges everything: concepts of figure, composition, media and movement, including the language of drawing. Exploring the ambiguity of time and history, Alan's work focuses on translating energy into images.
Alan received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and has also had solo exhibitions at Green Street Gallery, YES Gallery and The Chelsea Art Museum. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
